gameplay:

With the use of Graphical interaction, players can click on the links to control their cities, buildings and travel to other towns. In 1100 AD the player can construct an ideal medieval settlement over an unoccupied land. The player has full tactical control over troops in a real-time combat in the city. Acting aggressively or joining with other players for better protection can be the difference in having fun in the game or not. One hire leaders and heroes, make them lead armies and advance their skills. Also, players can exchange resources with other or just rob their enemies in order to speed up kingdom development. The game does not require too much attention, many operations (even tactical combat) can be played automatically (by the AI).[6]

New support player:

As a new player in a game, it is difficult to survive. 1100 AD makes it “[impossible] to be attacked for first 2 starting weeks, for [opponents to demolish buildings with] rams or catapults, and [to be attacked by] players that are 3 times stronger than you are during first two months.” [5] [3] New players also have access to a tutorial and many players agree that the site has the best tutorial of many online games:

“Although this game has a rather steep learning curve, it hands down has the best tutorial of any browser based multiplayer game.”[5]
“The game has a great tutorial which can be used by anybody. It walks you step by step through opening developments, giving you specific advice about where to click for each action. Plus, you will receive free stuff for doing it.”[5]

The City and Its Buildings:

Everyone starts off with one city. Each city is located in a valley. There are multiple valleys for every server. There are multiple cities in each valley. The developers add valleys to servers depending on the need. Over time, by donating resources to the library a player can gain city control points. City control points are then used to obtain and capture another city.

There are various buildings that perform differnt tasks.

Diplomacy:

Although many games stress "Guilds", "Tribes" or, in the case of 1100AD, "Orders"; 1100AD is more of a single play, Player-on-Player, agreement type game. Alliances, NAP's (Non-Aggression Pacts) and Wars are created on a 1 on 1 basis, and carry on to the players "Vassals".

Vassals:

A vassal is a player that submits himself to the protection of his lord, by giving their lord a portion of their power. Vassals may be aquired through donating resources to your obelisk. Each vassal point allows you to hire a vassal. By becoming someone's lord you must help defend them and help them along the way. You can offer other players to become your vassal, but having too many can be costly. What a lord demands is often too much and the system is sometimes abused, so choose your master wisely.

Orders:

More experienced players can join or even create an order, a group of players that work together for mutual protection. Often you have to pay gold (currency you buy with real money) to join. Once an order is created, you may allow others to join to try and become a powerful order. You may also choose the rate that players must pay as well as which orders you would like to be at peace as well as at war with. Orders give the owner and all who are in it, shared specials from merc camps.

To create an order costs 1000 gold(~$15 USD), and the gold can be used to upgrade the order. Creating and running an order is relatively expensive, therefore plan for expenses or hope other players give gold to the order.[9]
